Taking place in Vancouver each year, the Talking Stick Festival is an annual event in Vancouver that showcases Indigenous art and performances and features some of the best and emerging Indigenous artists with a lineup of theatre, storytelling, writing, music, spoken word, dance, film, visual arts and more. This year, the event celebrates its 19th year. The festival runs from February 18 – 29, 2020.

Here are a few of this year’s highlights:

Opening Gala – Wax hoks en Shqalawin (Open Your Hearts)

The Wax hoks en Shqalawin (Open Your Hearts) Gala is a wonderful evening of entertainment and celebration. Sample a showcase of the 2020 festival performers while enjoying a delicious buffet dinner.

Dance

Matriarchs Uprising 1 & 2 is a presentation of contemporary dance and visual artistry from Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

Theatre

Th’owxiya: The Hungry Feast Dish is for all-ages, and tells the engaging tale from the Kwantlen First Nation village of Squa’lets about Th’owxiya, an old and powerful spirit that has developed a taste for children!

Music

Check out some of Indigenous music’s top artists in one night, this double bill features JUNO-winners Digging Roots sharing the stage with Logan Staats and Mexican award-winning artist QuiQue Escamilla.
