Indigenous Bar Association (IBA), 33rd Annual IBA Conference Support and 2020-2021 Annual Report Design

The IBA is an organization dedicated to revitalizing and implementing Indigenous legal traditions while advancing the interests of Indigenous peoples in the legal profession. They approached Castlemain for assistance with an awareness campaign for their upcoming Annual Conference. IBA hosted the conference to recognize the many recent experiences of Indigenous practitioners and provided a space to share their experiences. The second request was for the design of their Annual Report.

The IBA did not have a style guide when Castlemain was engaged; however, they had a logo and a basic colour palette. Castlemain’s design team created branding that worked across digital and print mediums.

The result led to a sophisticated, monochromatic colour palette that utilized strong geometric forms found in their logo, coupled with contrasting typography that saw bold serif headers with a minimalistic sans serif in a light weight.

The use of traditional font choices underscored the look and feel the target audience would expect from an organization such as IBA. Traditional nêhiyawewin is the host territory’s language which was highlighted as a focal point, with the beautiful orthography providing visual interest and balance to the communications material and reporting in question. Finally, a local artist provided a stunning design, which was vectorized and added as a key supporting element throughout the Annual Report.
